Hello David
Thanks for your comments.
Please can you present the following to your steering committee in the context of your previous emails below.
I found our meeting very useful. Thank you. Regarding differences in the organisations, yes, I think there may be several but please be assured that we also consider our members to be intelligent and have a degree of common sense. After all, they are all independent business owners. They also have the right to vote at our meetings and we obviously abide by a majority decision. We would consider anything else to be undemocratic and unethical. I only point this out as you raise these points as though they were special in relation to APICS and I don't want any confusion as to the way the Guild operates. Our members elect a board to represent their interests much like we elect individuals to represent us in parliament. The board then make the decisions on a day to day, month to month basis. If the members don't like it they can get rid of any or all at a meeting. We don't have to seek a mandate from the members for every action we take. That would be akin to a government holding a referendum on every decision it takes. That said the Guild are happy to have a dialogue with a view to promoting professional competence and raising standards within the UK sweeping industry.
You are right to say that this is "not the time to be harping back to personality clashes and personal vendettas", so I am a little disappointed that you write" Although you say you are a new organisation, unfortunately the majority of your Board of Directors was also on the old Board of the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps"
Please be clear: As of December 2009 all of our members ceased to belong to the private limited company known as The Guild of Master Sweeps. This company was owned and run by one individual. A new, not for profit limited by guarantee company called The Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps was incorporated. It is owned by its members and run by an elected board. I am disappointed to learn that you think it unfortunate that some of the individuals on our current board were also involved with GMS. It was down to the tenacity and vision of some of these individuals, along with others, which lead to the changes which have liberated the Guild and its members and brought us to this point.
It would be good to move forward from this point and hopefully achieve some much needed collaboration and I'd repeat that the Guild are happy to have a dialogue with a view to promoting professional competence and raising standards within the UK sweeping industry. It is the reason for our existence.
Please consider this an open letter. In the interests of fairness and transparency please can you post it on the forum with your other communications as well as on your blog.
Next time - yes, less coffee and, did you get a parking ticket?
Best Regards
Lawson Wight
Public Relations Director

I am attending a US Chimney Sweep trade show in Orlando in February 2012. I wonder if there are any other sweeps out there from any organisation who would be interested in going as a delegation of British chimney sweeps? I am looking at flying into Orlando, hiring a car and driving down to the venue and staying for around 6 to 7 days. So if you're interested please email me.
