Chimney Sweepers Patron Saint

The Patron Saint of Fire Fighters and Chimney Sweeps is St Florian.

Florian was a Roman officer in Noricum during the rule of the Roman Emperor Diocletian (284-305 AD).

Although he was a Roman officer he transferred his religious beliefs to Christianity.  When he refused to worship the Roman gods he was executed by drowning.

The miracle he is said to have performed - a town that was engulfed in fire was saved when Florian used one bucket of water to put the flames out.  Some say it might have been a bucket of beer.  This is how he became the Patron Saint of Fire Fighters.

As Chimney Sweepers also aid in the prevention of fires in homes, he also became our Patron Saint too.

In many countries fire fighters are chimney sweeps, in others chimney sweeps work part time as fire fighters.

The 4th May is Saint Florian day - a good day to call your sweep to get your chimney swept.
